Food XRAY
Add a nutrition team & advanced metabolic insights to your Track & Score features. Now you can just take photos of your meals. Our team of human experts will do the rest, giving you the highest quality data in existence. These metabolic insights will help you understand and optimize energy balance, glucose levels, muscle protein synthesis, leptin and ghrelin levels, phytonutrients, nutrient density, fasting times, and more.
See how it works
“ Instead of having to split my attention between counting nutrients and making healthy decisions at the same time, I can just take a picture of my food and concentrate on the decision itself. Lower overhead effort makes it easier to stick to a goal.”

Just take photos of your food
The most advanced food sensor is already in your pocket. Your camera.
You may already be taking photos of your food. With Gyroscope XRAY, that is all you need. It is that simple. No more complex searches or needing a degree in nutrition to get your nutrition metrics.
Your new metabolic coach
With Gyroscope XRAY (included in the Coach membership), your food photos will be analyzed by a team of nutritionists to make sure you get the highest quality data with no effort — powering the world’s first metabolic coach experience to give instant feedback on every meal.
The insights will tell you what meals are great to repeat to reach your goal, or warn you of many common mistakes that may result in an unhealthy spike in your blood glucose, a meal being too high or low in certain nutrients, or having imbalanced hunger hormone levels.
“ XRAY is different from anything I've used in the past because I can take a picture of food and forget about it.”

“ This approach for food tracking is also really stressless for me compared to using other apps where you have to add the exact amount of all ingredients. I also tried this some time ago, but in the end, adding all ingredients by myself was nothing to keep for a long time in my routine.”

Automatic calculation of your eating & fasting times
When you eat is almost as important as what you’re eating. Just one measurement on its own is not insightful, but tracked consistently over many weeks your photos give a complete picture of your nutrition.
From the timestamps on the photos, we can automatically detect periods of fasting and calculate your daily eating window. These are graphed in your trends so you can see how your fasting times affect your other metrics or how close you are to the daily target you set.
Add new nutrition grades to your Health Score
Even if you are exercising and sleeping perfectly, an unhealthy diet can undo all your hard work and hold you back from your goals. With XRAY, your Health Score is expanded to include all the metrics of your diet.
After tracking your food consistently for a few weeks, you will unlock a new nutrition component of your Health Score. This will give you actionable insights about all aspects of your food, from protein and fiber intake, to more advanced metrics like food processing and glucose spikes, and even chemicals like alcohol and caffeine.
“ The food tracking is also the best food tracking available. I've tried other apps, and entering in details manually takes a lot of effort. With Gyroscope I can just snap a photo before I eat, upload them at my convenience and get detailed breakdowns of carbs, fat and protein. It's so simple! ”

Become an expert by studying the Academy
Food processing, fiber, BMR, ketones, glucose spikes. Nutrition is full of complex terms and conflicting advice. Even if you had accurate data, it may be unclear what to do with it or how it can help you.
The Academy solves this by teaching you everything starting from the basics and first principles. Follow along with the chapters and insights to become an expert on your own health.
Start with a focus on food quality and how to make every meal a healthy and balanced one. Then you can continue to food timing and other variables, and even track your glucose and ketone levels.
Add glucose and ketones for tailored meal insights
Gyroscope works with the top glucose and ketone monitor to analyze your blood sugar along with your food. You can measure glucose in the app from the + button, or sync it automatically from a Dexcom CGM.
Even without paying for a separate glucose monitor, XRAY will teach you how to eat healthy meals and keep your glucose levels balanced.
“ With other health apps, you need to log everything you eat in detail, which you can manage for some time, but it is easy to forget. Just taking a picture of your food and have that analyzed is awesome.”

How accurate is the data?
If the photo is obscured or mysterious and not obvious, then adding a more detailed label will help to ensure accuracy. Depending on your goals and available time, you can choose whether to provide more details and nuance behind what exactly was eaten (and what part of the plate was left over), or just submit photos for more convenient but less precise counting.
Check out the video above for more details and tips from the team on how to ensure maximum accuracy with minimum effort.
The people analyzing the food are actual professionals, and so it is likely they are actually able to do it better than you would if doing it yourself — when provided with the necessary information.
Behind the scenes, we use a very accurate food database that has the correct macro and micronutrient breakdown for each meal (as well as other important chemicals like caffeine, alcohol, etc.) to your history. This is also a bit more challenging and time consuming than a simple database like MyFitnessPal, but results in a much more accurate history with detailed micronutrients rather than just calorie counts.
Ultimately all nutrition counts are estimates — even the calorie labels printed on a box are within just 10% of the “correct” value, so precision in this field is ultimately unattainable. However, the data stored is precise and accurate enough to get correct metabolic insights and grades, and ultimately to get you the results you want.
How long does the analysis take?
Generally it is done within a few hours of uploading the photo, so you will see all your metrics by the end of the day or in your daily report the next morning.
For the fastest analysis, we suggest taking the photos directly in the app when you are about to eat. For a more convenient and batched approach, you can keep the photos on your phone and upload them at the end of each day.
The exact timing depends on how complex the photos were, how many photos you uploaded at a time, and available capacity of the team. Our priority is accuracy over speed, to make sure your history is always correct.
How do I use the food tracking?
Like all the other Gyroscope trackers (Places, Sleep, Mood, etc.), it is very easy to use and designed to collect maximum data with minimum effort. Importantly, it can also be done retroactively. Similar to identifying unidentified places at the end of the day (rather than needing to check-in while there), you can upload your food photos later in the app without any loss of data quality.
Just take photos of everything that you eat, and then you will be able to automatically see your fasting and eating times along with a visual diary of all your meals. For more feedback and metrics, you can upgrade to Coach to have a professional coach and nutrition team give more feedback on your nutrition via the Food XRAY.
How much does Gyroscope XRAY cost?
Gyroscope XRAY costs $99/month, or is included with all Gyroscope Coach memberships.
What is the difference from Score?
XRAY adds nutrition tracking and the metabolic coach feature. The Health Score focuses mostly on automated analysis of data like steps, sleep, workouts, heart rate, and more. The XRAY expands that to include fasting, nutrition, glucose and other complex data points that aren’t automatically tracked but still provide a lot of valuable insight.
Otherwise, you can still add your food photos but they will not be analyzed automatically and the metabolic insights from the professional nutrition team will not be known.
Can Gyroscope XRAY help me lose weight?
The Gyroscope platform has been designed to get you to your goal body composition using the latest scientific principles. Not only will eating healthy and balanced meals likely help you reach your goal weight, but more importantly it will help get you up with the lifelong habits and systems to maintain it forever.
For real case studies and examples of it in action, check out the Case Studies.
If you have a particular goal, we highly recommend Gyroscope Coach to work with an actual expert. The Health Score, XRAY and other features in Gyroscope are just powerful tools that need to be used in the correct way to get results. If you’re not able to afford a coach or just don’t want to work with a human, the automated insights and guides in the app should still give you good results if followed.
Can I sign up in app?
You can select Gyroscope Coach in app, which includes all the XRAY benefits plus a coach to help you use it.
The standalone XRAY membership (with no coach) is only available online right now.
Can I expense this?
Many companies that care about their employee health will provide reimbursements for health expenses like gyms or a Gyroscope membership. This is a win-win since it keeps you feeling great, more productive at work, and also saves you money.
With the current COVID situation, you may want to cancel an unused physical gym membership and switch to Gyroscope XRAY to have that reimbursed by your company.
You can find your receipts in the billing page of the site to submit for reimbursement — or have your company sign up for the Company Dashboard to provide the features directly to your team.
I use a Dexcom CGM, can I use that?
Yes, the data is exported to Apple Health and Gyroscope after a 3-hour FDA mandated delay.
You will be able to see your glucose graph for the day and each meal in your reports, and see how each meal affected your glucose levels.
Even without a glucose monitor, the metabolic coach will give you tips and feedback on how to optimize the meal to reduce potential spikes, so tracking your own sugar is not necessary but does provide more powerful data.
I use a Freestyle CGM, can I use that?
No, those are not a true CGM (does not automatically sync via bluetooth) and the data is not exported to Apple Health, so currently it is not automatically tracked in Gyroscope.
However, you can manually enter the glucose numbers in the app from the + button in order to see them in your account.
I use MyFitnessPal, can I use that data?
No, the data is not accurate or detailed enough to be used within Gyroscope.
Calories and macros from Apple Health are synced automatically (and have been since 2017 when we launched that feature) and will still be shown in your daily report like before. If you are tracking with MyFitnessPal, you may be able to count your calories there and see them in Gyroscope. However, we’ve found that this does not usually lead to good results.
This is no longer the recommended way to track since the data is often inaccurate or missing important details like food photos, names, fasting time, micronutrients, and other details. Even if the data was accurate in the source app (which is not true, since it is mostly user generated), often in the Apple Health export data gets skipped or duplicated, so the totals are not reliable enough to show in the Trends.
You can still use that data and see it at the bottom of the graphs section of your daily report, but it isn’t used for the Food tab or Fasting Timer, which require having an accurate food photo and more specific details about the meals.
I use Cronometer, can I use that data?
Calories and macros from Apple Health are synced automatically and will be shown in your daily report. If you are tracking with Cronometer, you can still use that data in their app as well as see the estimated calories from Apple Health.
Even if the data was accurate in the Cronometer app, most of the accuracy and micronutrient detail, food names, etc. are lost in the exporting process and not shared. For this reason, this is no longer the recommended way to track since it will not provide the important details shown in the Food Tab — especially food photos, names, fasting time, micronutrients, and other details. Often in the Apple Health export process, data gets skipped or duplicated, so the totals for calories are not reliable enough to show in the Trends.
You can still use that data and see it at the bottom of the graphs section of your daily report, but it isn’t used for the Food tab or Fasting Timer, which require having an accurate food photo and more specific details about the meals.
I use Apple Health, can I use that data?
In most cases, the manual logging is not sustainable long-term so we recommend switching to the simpler and easier photo logging system — available for free in the app to calculate fasting, or with XRAY to get metabolic insights.
Calories and macros from Apple Health are synced automatically and will be shown in your daily report. We have had this feature in the app since launch in 2017, however it has had limited results. It turns out that Apple Health is great for automated data from sensors (like steps or heart rate) but not good for user-entered information or really nuanced information like micronutrients, due to both losing important details (a photo is worth a thousand words as they say) as well as the risk of duplicated or skipped information in the process.
You can still use the available data at the bottom of the graphs section of your daily report, but it isn’t detailed enough for the Fasting Timer or Metabolic Coach features, which require having an accurate food photo and more specific details about the meals.
