Sleeping with an eye mask

An eye mask can block unwanted light and may improve next-day alertness or sleep in bright settings, although much of the sleep evidence combines masks with earplugs.

The idea

Light is a timing signal for the circadian system. An opaque eye mask reduces light reaching the eyes when curtains, streetlights, early sunrise, or indicator lights keep the room from becoming fully dark.

The mask is a physical light barrier, not a sedative. It is most likely to matter when light is actually present. Fit and comfort matter because pressure, gaps, or a strap that slips can create a new source of sleep disruption.

  1. Across two crossover experiments with 89 and 33 final participants, an eye mask improved next-day learning with a combined effect of d = 0.19; in the first experiment, vigilance reaction time improved with d = 0.16, while measured sleep duration and self-rated sleep quality did not change.

The at-home cognitive study supports a small next-day effect. Hospital studies suggest better sleep in bright, noisy environments, but they cannot separate the mask from the earplugs.

How to do it

  • 1Buy a comfortable, opaque sleep mask. The Gyroscope protocol suggests an Alaska Bear mask, but fit matters more than the brand.
  • 2Put it on right before bed and check for light gaps around the nose without tightening the strap enough to create pressure.

The common mistakes are choosing a mask that leaks light, overtightening it, or changing blackout curtains at the same time. Any of those can make the experiment hard to interpret.

Setup

  • Get a generic opaque sleep mask with an adjustable strap and enough eye clearance to avoid pressure.
  • Try it while lying in your usual sleep position and check for light leaks, heat, and strap pressure.
  • On the first night, adjust the strap before turning out the lights and keep the room lighting unchanged.
  • Place the mask where it is easy to find at bedtime and note if it shifts or comes off overnight.

Do eye masks actually improve sleep?

Is an eye mask better than blackout curtains?

Both reduce light, but they solve different setup problems. A mask travels easily and blocks light close to the eyes, while curtains do not add face pressure; use the same option throughout the experiment.

Should a sleep mask press on my eyes?

No. Choose a shape that rests around the eye area, loosen the strap if it leaves pressure, and stop if it causes pain or irritation.

Can I combine an eye mask with earplugs?

How do I stop the mask slipping off?

Adjust it while lying in your normal position, not while standing. A strap that is secure without pressure gives a cleaner test than tightening it after every poor night.

Do I need to wear it all night?

Keeping it on for the full sleep period makes the comparison easier to interpret. If it comes off, log the night honestly and note whether fit or comfort was the reason.
