The new Gyroscope V11.2 is now live and ready for download in the App Store!

<< intro: the big frame (new AI, the pace of progress) and thanks to the members who write in with suggestions, bug reports and reviews >>

<< the four big ones in one sentence: faster and smarter food analysis, an improved coach chat, new custom meditations and improved places accuracy >>

<< plus lots of other improvements, one sentence >>

Faster and smarter food analysis

<< why it matters in real life: logging a meal should take a second, a real example of the moment it helps >>

<< what changed: the camera is faster, especially in Automatic mode. Faster detection of food, faster analysis, more accurate nutrients and more >>

<< more fun to use: the faster shutter. The shot fires the moment you touch the button, and the result opens right away on a soft blurred frame of your photo while it loads >>

<< Fast, Deep or Extra deep: one switch for how deep the analysis goes, with a deeper pass for Max after the photo is saved >>

<< image: real screen of the food camera and its result >>

<< behind the scenes: the engineering that made it faster >>

<< Tip: one practical way to get the best result >>

Improved Coach chat

<< why it matters: a coach that keeps working on your question until it has the answer >>

<< what changed: an improved tool and chat system for better speed and reliability in conversations >>

<< before and now: your coach can use multiple tools to do more lookups and background tasks before replying. Previously it could get stuck, or stop working after sending you a message until you replied again >>

<< a real example question it can answer now >>

<< image: real coach chat that ran several lookups before it answered >>

<< new upgraded models for higher intelligence, in the chat and in background messages >>

<< Max: new experimental models including Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1 >>

New custom meditations

<< intro line >>

  • Upgraded voice for more realistic and high quality sound
  • New mixer to fine-tune your audio - now you can adjust how much time you want in silence or the volume of background and voice individually. (Or you can always just change your phone volume too)

<< image: real screen of a custom meditation playing, and the mixer >>

Note: generally having the phone unlocked will be best for the app to be able to run smoothly, even if your eyes are closed. Especially while it is first loading and generating. Once it is running and started, you could lock it if you need to. At night or in general you can also switch it to dark mode with one tap.

Tip: now you can choose custom meditation in your morning or evening routines. You can choose a fully custom one that will make a new one, OR you can now also pick a specific meditation you like to repeat that one exactly.

Tip: You can now choose between classic and new voice mode. Let us know which one you prefer!

One more tip: many people are doing the meditations as part of their morning routine. This is awesome, and a good way to fit it in consistently. However, you can also use the meditation feature at any time. You can access it from the + button. From here you can also select longer ones, as the ones during the routine will be optimized to be fairly short.

Improved places accuracy

Now we have a new standalone app for Places, so if you are interested in that feature you can download it to go even deeper into that data — with features like passport, travel analytics and more.

You can keep the main tracking in Gyroscope, and in this version we have updated the places tracking engine with all the fixes and improvements we’ve been testing in the last month. This includes better GPS handling, more accurate travel routes, accurate detection, handling of complex cases like trains with bad reception, and more.

<< image: a day timeline with clean routes, or a train trip >>

You can also access advanced places settings to adjust parameters like your visit radius (smaller will be more precise but also create more small stops, even if you stop at a stoplight for 4-5 minutes for example) while larger will focus on larger visits and be more reliable. You can also adjust between battery focused or accuracy optimized. This mostly affects the routes when you are out traveling, for example during driving.

<< image: the advanced places settings >>

In either case, if your phone goes into low battery mode or is low on battery, the tracking will automatically reduce itself. If your phone goes very low on battery this can mean gaps in your places timeline, but we think this is a good tradeoff as if your phone dies you will have gaps in data too AND no working phone. However, generally the places tracking should use nearly no battery on its own - about 1-2% total.

<< lots of other improvements too >>

<< one line into the weeds >>

Many new languages are here now!

Even if you have friends who don’t speak English, you can now share the app.

<< choose it on the first screen or in Customize, and the app, your coach and your reports follow it >>

<< image: the same screen in a few languages >>

<< A coach that sees more of your history >>

<< your coach can look through your sleep night by night, your mood, Health Score, DNA and body trends over the last 60 days, so a question like what time you have been waking up this month gets a real answer. Voice calls no longer hang up mid conversation >>

<< Editing your meals >>

Usually the system just works - just take a photo and everything gets figured out.

Now we have more handling for edge cases and more deep customization if you want to do significant changes to your original data. For example, in time change you can now move it to an entirely different meal or time of day. For example, someone was logging their meals in the morning with meal prep but then eating much later. Now you can edit a meal and change its time of day to another time that day.

<< image: editing a meal's time of day >>

Tip: otherwise if it is a different meal, you can use the “repeat” feature to clone a meal from the past and repeat it. Especially for meal prep or if you eat the same thing repeatedly (especially a highly rated meal) this can make both logging and hitting your targets more automatic.

In the + button, you’ll also see some intelligent repeatable suggestions based on what you usually eat around the current time. These can be logged with just one tap.

<< image: the repeatable suggestions in the + button >>

Custom schedules

So now we have some more niche settings for adjusting your meal times. Normally morning is in the morning, daytime starts around 11am until the evening, etc. and these usually match common cultural schedules of when people eat.

However, now you can custom override your eating schedule and define “morning” as something else. Either just small changes, like maybe you always sleep in until noon and you want breakfast to count around then. Or you are on a completely different shift schedule. Now you can have more strong overrides about what counts.

Late night

In general the advice is that at late night you should be sleeping, and not eating. If you are eating after midnight, now it goes into a special late night category. This replaces previous handling where late night meals would get mixed into the previous day’s dinner.

<< image: a day with a late night meal, optional >>

<< improved food targets and history views, one line, or cut >>

<< Hide the trackers you don’t use >>

The app shows many available trackers. Now you can tap ... to hide them if you don’t want to see something. For example there is a napping option, but if you never nap you can remove it.

<< image: the ... menu on a tracker with the hide option >>

<< Progress photos >>

<< improved progress photo tracking in the Body tab >>

In this update:

  • << A streamlined Health tab and navigation >>
  • << Fixes for Apple Watch and widgets >>
  • << anything else worth naming >>

Optimized for iPhone Duo

<< why it matters: the bigger screen and the fold, made for Gyroscope >>

<< open it up and the tabs move to a side rail, your day, Health and Coach spread into two columns, and pages like Biology, Blood, Workouts, Recipes and Settings split into a header on the left and details on the right >>

<< folded, everything fits the outer screen around the camera >>
