What is DHEA-S?
DHEA-sulfate, an adrenal hormone and a precursor to the sex hormones.
MenWhat it is
DHEA-sulfate is a hormone made mainly by your adrenal glands, which sit above your kidneys. It acts as a circulating supply of material that other tissues can convert into related sex hormones. Your body produces it in both men and women, with levels that change substantially across life.
The test measures the sulfated form because it is more stable in circulation than the unsulfated hormone. Your age and sex strongly influence the expected range. The result adds context about adrenal hormone production, but it does not directly measure your energy, stress tolerance or capacity to recover from training.
Why it matters
It declines steadily with age and reads adrenal reserve; low DHEA-S goes with fatigue and low resilience. Those symptoms are nonspecific, and this result alone cannot show that your adrenal glands are exhausted. An age-related decline also does not automatically mean you need to restore a younger level.
Your clinician may consider this marker with other hormones and your symptoms when assessing an unusual result. A high level can be relevant as well as a low one. Tracking how you sleep, eat and train can provide useful background, while avoiding the idea that this hormone is a general score for resilience.
What moves it
- Keep sleep regular. Adequate sleep supports your broader hormone regulation and helps you interpret fatigue. It does not guarantee a rise in this marker, but it gives recovery a consistent foundation.
- Train at a recoverable level. Choose regular activity and strength work that fit your current capacity. Continually increasing effort when recovery is poor can make your energy harder to interpret.
- Eat enough for daily demands. Balanced meals help you sustain movement and maintain muscle. Avoid severe restriction when you are already tired, because low intake can affect the wider hormonal setting.
- Make stress recovery practical. Use breaks, outdoor time and routines that help you disengage from work. These habits can improve how you feel without being presented as a reliable way to raise an adrenal hormone.
- Avoid hormone-boosting supplements. Products sold for adrenal support can alter hormone levels and complicate your results. Review what you already take with your clinician instead of treating an age-related reading as a reason to add more.
