Does MyFitnessPal work with Gyroscope?

Only partly. Through Apple Health we get raw calorie numbers and weight from MyFitnessPal, without meal times or a complete nutrient panel. That is not ideal for coaching. Free food tracking directly in Gyroscope captures far more.

Apple HealthData quality: low

Gyroscope has no direct MyFitnessPal integration. MyFitnessPal writes meal summaries and weight to Apple Health, and Gyroscope reads what it writes.

Applies to: MyFitnessPal on iPhone with HealthKit Sharing turned on.

What we get

  • Meal caloriesAs a summary per meal, without the original logged time.
  • Some nutrientsMyFitnessPal does not publish a complete export list.
  • WeightUpdates in both directions.

What stays behind

  • Meal timesMyFitnessPal says food timestamps do not sync to Apple Health.
  • Caffeine and Vitamin ASpecifically excluded from its export.
  • ExerciseMoves from Apple Health into MyFitnessPal, never the other way.

How to set it up

  1. Turn on HealthKit Sharing in MyFitnessPal. Go to More, Settings, Sharing and Privacy, HealthKit Sharing, choose the food and weight categories, and tap Allow, as in MyFitnessPal’s setup guide. In Apple’s Health app, open Sharing, Apps, MyFitnessPal and confirm the write permissions.
  2. Connect Gyroscope to Apple Health. Open Gyroscope, open your data sources, choose Apple Health, and tap Allow for every category when iOS asks. If you skipped one, go to iPhone Settings, Health, Data Access and Devices, Gyroscope, and turn it on there.
  3. Check your dashboard. After you log a meal and MyFitnessPal syncs, you should see its calories on your timeline as a summary for that day, next to your weight and sleep.

What you can do with it

Understand why raw calories are a thin signal.

A calorie total without meal times cannot tell you whether you ate late, whether protein was spread across the day, or which meal spiked you. Those are the questions coaching runs on.

The evidence. Vujović et al., Cell Metabolism, 2022. Eating the same meals four hours later increased hunger, lowered energy expenditure, and changed fat tissue gene expression, which is why timing is data, not detail.

Insider tipBecause MyFitnessPal drops timestamps, the last food time against sleep score correlation cannot run on its data. It runs fine on meals logged in Gyroscope.

Log from a photo instead.

Take a picture and Food XRAY reads the meal: calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat, fiber, sugar, caffeine, and the time you ate it. It is free in the app.

The evidence. Lichtman et al., New England Journal of Medicine, 1992. People who believed they could not lose weight underreported their food intake by an average of 47%. A photo taken at the table is much harder to underreport than a search box filled in later.

Insider tipPhoto logging also captures meal timing automatically, which makes the glucose, sleep, and energy balance correlations possible.

If you keep MyFitnessPal, keep the weight sync.

The one clean thing that crosses over is weight. Let it, and put it next to whatever you log in Gyroscope.

The evidence. Zheng et al., Obesity, 2015. People who weighed themselves more often lost more weight and regained less.

Insider tipRun protein against weight trend once you have a few weeks of meals in Gyroscope. It is the most useful nutrition correlation for most people.

Ask your coach what to change.

With a membership, an AI coach reads this data every morning and writes you a report before you are out of bed. It answers from your own numbers, not from generic advice. It needs meal timing, protein, and fiber to say anything useful, which is why tracking directly in Gyroscope gives it far more to work with than a calorie total.

Common questions

Is MyFitnessPal good enough for coaching?

No. Data quality is low: not much is shared, just raw calorie numbers without meal times. Free food tracking directly in Gyroscope captures far more.

Do my macros and micronutrients carry over?

Some do. MyFitnessPal’s official guidance promises calories and some nutrients, excludes caffeine and Vitamin A, and does not publish a complete list.

Will MyFitnessPal workouts reach Gyroscope?

No. MyFitnessPal documents exercise as an Apple Health-to-MyFitnessPal flow. Let the watch or app that recorded the activity write it to Apple Health directly.
