How it works
Cold water immersion can be a helpful and complimentary tool to manage stress and anxiety. Exposure to cold water triggers the release of hormones like adrenaline and epinephrine, which are all part of the body’s natural stress response. It also stimulates the vagus nerve which increases mood boosting hormones and neurotransmitters like beta endorphins and dopamine, lowering the heart rate and reducing the production of stress hormones in the body. This boosts the Central Nervous System’s capacity and functionality and, over time, you can become more and more resilient to the cold water, which can transfer into other areas of you life and your stress response in general. Along with stress and anxiety, cold plunges may also help with inflammation, circulation, recovery from training and immune health.
