How it works
Omega-3 fatty acids can significantly reduce blood levels of triglycerides, which are a type of fat linked to heart disease when present at high levels. They can lower the levels of Lipoprotein (a), a particle in the blood that carries cholesterol and is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, causing a mild increase in levels of HDL ("good") cholesterol. Omega-3s have anti-inflammatory properties, and since inflammation is thought to play a role in the development of atherosclerosis and other heart conditions, reducing inflammation can be beneficial for heart health. Omega-3s have also been found to stabilize the electrical activity of the heart muscle, which can reduce the risk of arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms) that can lead to sudden cardiac death, and by altering the production of certain substances involved in blood clotting, omega-3s can make the blood less likely to clot, which can reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. The most beneficial forms of omega-3 fatty acids are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are mainly found in fatty fish or algae sources. Plant based foods such as flax and chia seeds and walnuts are great sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) which the body can convert to EPA and DHA, but the conversion rate is quite low.
