How it works

Lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus) mushrooms contain bioactive substances that appear to have beneficial effects on the body, most notably the brain, heart and gut. They’re large, shaggy mushrooms that resemble a lion’s mane as they grow, are used for a variety of culinary and medical purposes across Asia, and sometimes also known as “hou tou gu” or “yamabushitake.” While research is ongoing and more human studies are needed, it is thought that Lion’s mane mushrooms may improve the development and function of nerves, which may also protect nerves from becoming damaged in the first place. Hence, it is often linked to improvements in focus, memory, anxiety and depression, and is also being studied closely with regards to the prevention of conditions such as dementia, Alzheimer and Parkinson’s disease. It also has strong anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immune-boosting abilities and has been shown to lower the risk of heart disease, cancer, ulcers and diabetes in animals.
