How long should you sit in a sauna?
Short answer
Start with 5–10 minutes, build toward 10–20 minutes, and use 20–30 minutes only when you already tolerate the heat well. The evidence favors repeatable sessions longer than 11 minutes over heroics. Leave when you feel unwell, and make duration something you can repeat consistently.
Build duration in bands
A useful session is long enough to create a heat response without turning tolerance into a contest. Start at the lower end, keep the heat setting stable, and extend only after the current band feels repeatable.

Consistency matters more than endurance
The cohort evidence combines session duration with weekly frequency. A duration you can repeat 2–3 or 4–7 times a week resembles the exposure bands that were actually studied more closely than one exhausting visit.
Longer is not automatically better. The clinical review found promising evidence but also called for stronger data on adverse effects and on which populations benefit.
What the research says
Laukkanen et al. measured sauna frequency, session duration, and mortality in 2,315 middle-aged Finnish men over a median of 20.7 years. Their JAMA Internal Medicine study from 2015 found that longer sessions were associated with lower risk than sessions under 11 minutes, while 2–3 and 4–7 sessions a week were associated with progressively lower risks than 1 session a week. This was a cohort association, not proof that longer sessions caused the lower risk.
Hussain and Cohen's Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine systematic review from 2018 assessed 40 clinical studies with 3,855 participants, including 13 randomized controlled trials. It concluded that benefits were plausible but that higher-quality evidence was needed, especially for adverse effects and for deciding which populations benefit.
Podstawski et al. measured body mass and physiological responses in 45 overweight sedentary men during four 10-minute rounds at 90–91C (194–196F), separated by 5-minute breaks. Their BioMed Research International study from 2019 recorded a 0.65 kg fall in body mass across that protocol.
