What temperature should a sauna be?

Short answer

Use about 90–93C (194–199F) as the dry-sauna range tested in short-term studies, not as a universal target. Humidity changes how hot the same wall reading feels, so temperature only makes sense beside humidity, session length, and your response. Choose a setting that lets you complete a repeatable session without treating heat tolerance as the goal.

Read the wall number in context

A dry room and a more humid room do not feel the same at the same temperature. More moisture limits how readily sweat evaporates, so the heat can feel more intense without a higher wall reading.

Match temperature to duration

The studies did not test temperature in isolation. One used 25 minutes, another used about 31 minutes after training, and another used four 10-minute rounds with 5-minute breaks. A useful setting is one you can pair with the intended duration consistently.

Do not copy the hottest protocol and assume it is better. The long-term cohort finding also tracked session length and weekly frequency, which makes the complete dose more important than one wall number.

What the research says

Laukkanen et al. measured sauna frequency, session duration, and mortality in 2,315 middle-aged Finnish men over a median of 20.7 years. Their JAMA Internal Medicine study from 2015 found that sessions longer than 11 minutes and frequencies of 2–3 or 4–7 sessions a week were associated with lower cardiovascular and all-cause mortality risks than the shorter and 1-session reference bands. The cohort summary does not supply one sauna temperature, and the association does not prove cause.

Ketelhut and Ketelhut measured blood pressure and heart rate in 19 healthy adults during a 25-minute sauna at 93C (199F) and 13% humidity. Their Complementary Therapies in Medicine study from 2019 found a cardiovascular response comparable to a 60–100 W exercise workload during the session, followed by blood pressure below baseline afterward.

Scoon et al. ran a small study of 6 male distance runners using about 31 minutes of post-training sauna at about 90C (194F) across about 13 sessions in 3 weeks. Their Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport study from 2007 found a 32% increase in run time to exhaustion and a 7.1% increase in plasma volume compared with control.

Podstawski et al. measured 45 overweight sedentary men during four 10-minute rounds at 90–91C (194–196F), with 5-minute breaks. Their BioMed Research International study from 2019 recorded a 0.65 kg fall in body mass across the protocol.
