Infrared vs traditional sauna: what is the difference?

Short answer

Infrared sauna uses radiant panels at a lower wall temperature, while traditional sauna heats the room air and sauna surfaces. The large Finnish cohort evidence was collected on traditional saunas, so its findings do not transfer automatically to infrared. Neither type is proven better here because their evidence bases are not the same size.

They deliver heat differently

Traditional sauna heats the enclosed room, which then heats you. Infrared panels direct radiant heat toward your body while the surrounding air stays cooler. That difference changes the wall reading and session feel without making the lower reading a weaker exposure by definition.

Which one the research was done on

Laukkanen et al.'s JAMA Internal Medicine study from 2015 followed 2,315 middle-aged Finnish men for a median of 20.7 years. It found that 2–3 and 4–7 traditional sauna sessions a week were associated with progressively lower cardiovascular and all-cause mortality risks than 1 session a week. This cohort association does not prove cause, and it was not an infrared-sauna study.

Hussain and Cohen's Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine systematic review from 2018 assessed 40 clinical studies with 3,855 participants, including 13 randomized controlled trials. It found plausible benefits but called for higher-quality evidence on adverse effects and on which populations benefit. The evidence base does not justify treating infrared and traditional exposure as identical.

Choose by response, not borrowed claims

Use the type you can access and repeat, then record the type, timing, and duration consistently. Compare your own heart and sleep measurements instead of assigning the traditional cohort results to an infrared session.
