Sauna before or after a workout?
Short answer
Use the sauna after your workout. A randomized trial used a 15-minute post-exercise sauna and found better blood pressure and cholesterol results than exercise alone, while the fitness gain came from the exercise. Heat before training adds cardiovascular load before the session you came to do.
Protect the workout first
Sauna raises heart rate and blood pressure during exposure. Putting that load before training can use capacity you need for the workout, while placing it after keeps the training stimulus first.

Sauna adds to training
The randomized trial does not show that sauna created the fitness gain. Exercise alone produced the larger cardiorespiratory fitness increase, about 6.2 mL/kg/min compared with about 2.7 mL/kg/min for exercise plus sauna relative to control.
A separate long-term cohort found that high cardiorespiratory fitness plus frequent sauna was associated with a larger risk reduction than either one alone. That supports treating sauna as an addition to training, not a substitute.
What the research says
Lee et al. randomized 47 participants across exercise plus sauna, exercise alone, and control for 8 weeks. Their American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology trial from 2022 used a 15-minute post-exercise sauna and found a systolic blood pressure reduction of about 8 mmHg plus a larger total cholesterol reduction than exercise alone. Exercise alone produced the larger fitness gain, about 6.2 mL/kg/min versus about 2.7 mL/kg/min for exercise plus sauna relative to control.
Ketelhut and Ketelhut measured blood pressure and heart rate in 19 healthy adults during a 25-minute sauna at 93C (199F) and 13% humidity. Their Complementary Therapies in Medicine study from 2019 found a cardiac response comparable to a 60–100 W exercise workload during the session, followed by blood pressure below baseline afterward.
Kunutsor et al. measured the joint association of cardiorespiratory fitness and sauna use with mortality in a long-term prospective cohort. Their Annals of Medicine study from 2018 found that high fitness plus frequent sauna was associated with a larger risk reduction than either one alone. The association does not establish cause.
Scoon et al. ran a small study of 6 male distance runners using about 31 minutes of post-training sauna at about 90C (194F) across about 13 sessions in 3 weeks. Their Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport study from 2007 found a 32% increase in run time to exhaustion and a 7.1% increase in plasma volume compared with control.
