How many calories does a sauna burn?
Short answer
No verified kilocalorie figure in the research supports using sauna as a calorie-burning strategy. The fast scale change is sweat loss, not evidence of fat loss. Sauna raises heart rate because your body is moving blood toward the skin to cool itself, which does not carry the same energy cost as exercise at a similar heart rate.
The scale is measuring sweat loss
One dry-sauna protocol recorded a 0.65 kg fall in body mass across four 10-minute rounds. Sweating reduces body mass during heat exposure, and rehydration brings that mass back. That temporary movement is not a measurement of body-fat loss.
If a sauna claim starts with a dramatic before-and-after scale result, look at fluid intake and the next measurement before interpreting it.
A raised heart rate is not the same workload
Heat can raise heart rate and blood pressure comparably to a 60–100 W exercise workload. The mechanism differs: during sauna, circulation shifts toward the skin to release heat, while exercise also requires working muscle to produce force and movement.
That is why a familiar exercise heart rate can make the calorie myth sound plausible without supplying a verified calorie result.
Use sauna for the evidence it has
The long-term cardiovascular findings are the stronger reason to build a sauna habit. They concern frequency, session duration, and associated health outcomes, not a calorie estimate.
What the research says
Podstawski et al. measured body mass and physiological responses in 45 overweight sedentary men during four 10-minute rounds at 90–91C (194–196F), with 5-minute breaks. Their BioMed Research International study from 2019 recorded a 0.65 kg fall in body mass across the 40-minute protocol.
Sweat loss explains why body mass can fall during heat exposure, and drinking replaces the lost fluid. That general physiology is separate from what the study itself labeled.
Ketelhut and Ketelhut measured blood pressure and heart rate in 19 healthy adults during a 25-minute sauna at 93C (199F) and 13% humidity. Their Complementary Therapies in Medicine study from 2019 found a cardiac response comparable to a 60–100 W exercise workload during the session, followed by blood pressure below baseline afterward.
Laukkanen et al. followed 2,315 middle-aged Finnish men for a median of 20.7 years. Their JAMA Internal Medicine study from 2015 found that 2–3 and 4–7 sessions a week were associated with progressively lower cardiovascular and all-cause mortality risk than 1 session a week. This was a cohort association, not proof that sauna caused the lower risk.
