What is HbA1c and what is a good level?
Your average blood sugar over about three months, read from sugar bound to red blood cells.

What it is
Hemoglobin is the protein inside your red blood cells that carries oxygen. Glucose in your blood attaches to some of that hemoglobin as the cells circulate. The lab measures the share with glucose attached, giving you a view of your usual blood sugar exposure over the recent life of those cells.
This reading smooths out the changes that happen around individual meals. It does not show every rise or dip, and it is different from checking your glucose at the moment you take the sample. Changes in red blood cell turnover or certain hemoglobin traits can also affect how the result reads.
Why it matters
It catches prediabetes years before a fasting glucose does, and it moves with sleep, training and carbohydrate quality. It gives you a way to follow your longer-term glucose pattern when a spot reading looks ordinary. It does not always detect a problem earlier than fasting glucose, so the tests can provide complementary information.
Your result makes more sense when you consider your recent routine and any conditions that affect your blood. A change after more consistent training or different meals can be useful feedback, but an unexpected result may need confirmation. You can share the pattern with your clinician instead of drawing a conclusion from the label alone.
What moves it
- Move after you eat. A comfortable walk gives your muscles a reason to use incoming glucose. Choose a habit that fits ordinary meals so you can repeat it without planning a full workout.
- Build and use muscle. Regular strength training supports the tissue that handles much of your glucose. Combine it with aerobic activity and allow enough recovery to keep your training consistent.
- Choose filling carbohydrate sources. Beans, vegetables and whole grains bring fiber alongside carbohydrate. Pair them with protein and notice which meals leave you satisfied without frequent sugary snacks or drinks.
- Protect regular sleep. Short or disrupted sleep can make glucose regulation harder and change your appetite. A steady bedtime and wake time can support the food and movement habits you are building.
- Reduce excess bodyfat sustainably. If appropriate for you, gradual loss can improve insulin sensitivity. Keep the focus on repeatable meals and activity so the change remains useful after the next test.
