The idea

Alcohol can shorten the path to sleep early in the night, but sedation is not the same as normal sleep. As alcohol is metabolized, sleep architecture and autonomic regulation can shift, producing less REM sleep and weaker overnight recovery.

The Gyroscope experiment removes alcohol rather than adding another intervention. That lets you compare nights without alcohol with your own usual pattern in resting heart rate, HRV, sleep duration, and overall Sleep Score.

  1. In 4,098 Finnish employees, low, moderate, and high alcohol intake reduced an HRV-derived overnight recovery measure by 9.3, 24.0, and 39.2 percentage points, respectively, compared with each person's alcohol-free nights.

The controlled studies are small, but their direction agrees with the large within-person field study. Effects vary by dose and person, which makes an alcohol-free self-comparison useful.

How to do it

  • 1Avoid alcohol completely for one week and mark the habit every day.

Does alcohol help you fall asleep?

Why does alcohol raise sleeping heart rate?

Can a small amount still affect sleep?

This experiment does not test a cutoff. It removes alcohol for the full test period so timing, dose, and drink type do not become separate variables.

Are alcohol-free drinks okay?

They can be, if they help maintain the habit. Pick a replacement that does not add a large amount of sugar or caffeine compared with your baseline routine.

What if stopping alcohol feels difficult or unsafe?

This experiment is not a withdrawal plan. If stopping feels unsafe or you are concerned about dependence, seek clinical guidance rather than testing abstinence on your own.
