Tart cherry before bed

Montmorency tart cherry has increased sleep time in a few small trials, but newer capsule and healthy-adult studies found no benefit.

The idea

Montmorency tart cherries contain melatonin and compounds that may affect tryptophan availability. Tryptophan is used to make serotonin, part of the pathway involved in sleep timing.

The amount delivered depends heavily on the product. Concentrate, ready-to-drink juice, powder, and capsules are not interchangeable, which may help explain why small studies point in different directions.

What the studies show

Sleep time gains in two small tart cherry trialsHorizontal bars show 34 minutes of additional sleep in one trial and 84 minutes in another small trial.Sleep time gains in two small tart cherry trialsHowatson34 minutesLosso84 minutesSource: Howatson et al., European Journal of Nutrition 2012Source: Losso et al., American Journal of Therapeutics 2018
Sleep time changes in two small trials, Howatson, European Journal of Nutrition, 2012; Losso, American Journal of Therapeutics, 2018.
  1. In 20 healthy adults, 30 mL of Montmorency concentrate twice daily for seven days increased total sleep time by 34 minutes, sleep efficiency by 5–6%, and urinary melatonin by about 17% versus placebo.

Howatson, European Journal of Nutrition, 2012

  2. Among eight older adults with insomnia who completed a crossover trial, 240 mL of tart cherry juice twice daily for two weeks increased polysomnography-measured sleep time by 84 minutes.

Losso, American Journal of Therapeutics, 2018

  3. In 34 adults with sleep issues and overweight or obesity, a 500 mg Montmorency capsule one hour before bed for 14 days did not change total sleep time, sleep stages, sleep quality, or insomnia scores.

    Tucker, Nutrients, 2024

  4. In 44 healthy adults, either two 240 mL bottles of tart cherry juice per day or two powder capsules per day for 30 days produced no between-group difference in sleep time or quality.

    Hillman, Nutrition and Health, 2026

The positive trials were small and used juice or concentrate, while larger or newer tests of other formulations were null. The 84-minute result came from only eight completers and should not be treated as a typical expected gain.

How to do it

  • 1Use a product made specifically from Montmorency tart cherries.
  • 2Follow the Gyroscope protocol: drink 2 oz of Montmorency juice extract every day around dinner, or take a tart cherry supplement in the evening.
  • 3Keep the form and dose fixed. The studied daily range on this page is 60 mL of concentrate to 480 mL of juice; a separate 500 mg capsule trial was negative.
  • 4Track sleep nightly. The cited positive trials assessed results after seven days or two weeks.

Talk to your doctor before starting a tart cherry supplement, especially if you have a medical condition or take medications.

A common mistake is switching between juice, concentrate, and capsules as though they deliver the same intervention. Pick one format and log it consistently.

Setup

  • Get a generic Montmorency tart cherry juice, concentrate, or supplement with a clearly stated serving.
  • Pick one form for the whole experiment and keep a measuring cup or the labeled serving nearby.
  • On the first night, take the chosen product around dinner and record the form, serving, and time.
  • Keep the rest of the evening food and drink routine stable, including any added mixer.

Under $20 Concentrate runs roughly $15–25 a month at studied doses, with cost varying by form and serving.

How hard is it

2 / 5

The daily serving is easy, but consistency requires using the same form, amount, and timing. Juice volume, taste, and remembering a dinner-time step create a modest adjustment burden.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Simple food-based routine with no bedroom equipment.
  • Positive juice and concentrate trials provide concrete protocols.
  • Easy to measure and log at the same time each day.
  • Several forms are available for different preferences.

Cons

  • Evidence is mixed and positive studies were small.
  • Juice, concentrate, powder, and capsules are not interchangeable.
  • Juice adds liquid and naturally occurring sugar to the evening.
  • Requires an ongoing purchase and careful serving consistency.

Frequently asked questions

Does tart cherry actually help sleep?

The evidence is mixed. A small crossover study found longer and more efficient sleep with concentrate, while a newer powder trial found no improvement in sleep outcomes. Howatson, European Journal of Nutrition, 2012; Tucker, Nutrients, 2024

Is juice better than capsules?

The current studies do not establish a best form. Positive trials used juice or concentrate, while the cited powder trial was negative, so choose one form and do not assume equal effects across products. Tucker, Nutrients, 2024

When should I take tart cherry?

Follow the Gyroscope protocol around dinner and keep the timing stable. The goal is a repeatable intervention, not chasing a different bedtime window each night.

Does tart cherry contain melatonin?

The concentrate study measured an increase in a urinary melatonin marker alongside sleep changes. That does not make every tart cherry product equivalent to a melatonin supplement. Howatson, European Journal of Nutrition, 2012

What about the sugar in tart cherry juice?

Check the product label and keep the serving fixed. If you switch to a capsule to avoid juice, treat that as a different experiment because the studied forms are not interchangeable.

Can I just eat fresh cherries?

Fresh cherries are not the intervention studied on this page. The amount and composition would differ from a measured juice, concentrate, or supplement protocol.

Measuring whether it works on you

Gyroscope Labs runs tart cherry as a tracked experiment against your own baseline. It compares your Sleep Score, HRV, and resting heart rate with the period before the experiment.

Sleep Score is 0–100 and is built from HRV, resting heart rate, and sleep duration, each scored against your own history. Record the product, form, dose, and timing so the habit remains consistent.
