How to correlate your sleep with exercise, caffeine, or anything else you track
Short answer
Put your sleep metric and the behavior you want to test on the same dated timeline, then compare days where both values exist. Check the same day and nearby days because an activity may line up with sleep later rather than immediately. Use the result to find a pattern worth testing, not to claim that correlation proves cause.
Choose one clear measure on each side
For sleep, choose a consistent output such as duration, bedtime, wake time, HRV, or resting heart rate. For the comparison, choose one recorded variable such as workout load, steps, last caffeine time, last food time, or a manually tracked habit.
Avoid changing definitions midway through the date range. If one device replaces another, mark the source change so a hardware difference is not mistaken for a lifestyle effect.
Align dates and test timing
Decide which date owns an overnight sleep session and use that rule consistently. Then compare the behavior with the previous day, the same day, and the next day. This exposes a delayed relationship that a same-date chart can hide.
