Does Apple Watch Ultra 3 work with Gyroscope?

Yes. Ultra 3 writes the same full set as every Apple Watch: steps, workouts with distance, elevation, and route, heart rate, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep stages, respiratory rate, VO2 max, blood oxygen, and wrist temperature. Its battery means you can wear it every night, which is where the best data comes from.

Apple HealthData fit: 5/5

The watch writes everything to Apple Health on your iPhone. Connect Gyroscope to Apple Health once and it all flows in on its own.

Applies to: Ultra 3 needs an iPhone 11 or later on iOS 26 or later. Ultra 2 and the first Ultra connect the same way.

What we get

  • StepsDaily step count through Apple Health.
  • WorkoutsType, duration, heart rate, distance, elevation, and route.
  • Heart rateBackground and workout readings from the optical sensor.
  • Resting heart rateApple’s daytime estimate, plus the sleeping value Gyroscope calculates itself.
  • Heart rate variabilityCalculated by the watch and saved in Health.
  • Sleep stagesAwake, REM, Core, and Deep after you wear the watch to sleep.
  • Respiratory rateRecorded while you sleep.
  • VO2 maxEstimated during qualifying outdoor walks, runs, and hikes.
  • Blood oxygenSubject to Apple’s regional and US device limits.
  • Wrist temperatureNightly deviation once the watch has your baseline.

What stays behind

  • Depth, water temperature, and satellite featuresUltra-specific sensors stay in Apple’s apps. Satellite connectivity sends nothing to Gyroscope.

How to set it up

  1. Pair it and turn on sleep tracking. Follow Apple’s Ultra 3 pairing steps, then enable Track Sleep with Apple Watch and wear it for at least an hour overnight so stages appear.
  2. Connect Gyroscope to Apple Health. Open Gyroscope, open your data sources, choose Apple Health, and tap Allow for every category when iOS asks. If you skipped one, go to iPhone Settings, Health, Data Access and Devices, Gyroscope, and turn it on there.
  3. Check your dashboard. You should see today’s steps, heart rate, and last night’s sleep within minutes, and your first workout as soon as you finish one. Heart, sleep, and activity grades fill in over the first week.

What you can do with it

Use the battery to build a nightly baseline.

Most watches miss nights because they are on the charger. Ultra 3 does not have to be, and a full week of nights is what turns HRV from noise into a signal.

The evidence. Plews et al., Sports Medicine, 2013. In elite endurance athletes, a rolling seven-day average of HRV tracked training adaptation, while single-day values were too variable to act on.

Insider tipGyroscope’s Sleep Score is built from HRV, resting heart rate, and duration, and Sleep Battery carries a seven-night rolling debt. Judge a training block by the week, never by one night.

Let resting heart rate referee your training.

The morning after a long effort, the sleeping heart rate tells you whether you absorbed it. A few beats above your norm for two or three nights means you are still paying for it.

The evidence. Zhang, Shen and Qi, CMAJ, 2016. Across about 1.2 million people, every 10 beats per minute of higher resting heart rate came with roughly 9% higher all-cause mortality, which is why the long-term trend matters as much as the day-to-day swing.

Insider tipRun resting heart rate against long-effort days in the correlations view. Gyroscope shows the best lag, so you can see whether the cost lands the same night or a day later.

Keep the VO2 max estimate honest.

Apple only updates VO2 max after steady outdoor walks, runs, or hikes with GPS. Intervals and treadmill sessions do not count.

The evidence. Mandsager et al., JAMA Network Open, 2018. Among 122,007 adults, higher cardiorespiratory fitness meant lower mortality with no upper limit to the benefit, so the estimate is worth keeping current.

Insider tipCross-check it with the mile time benchmark. If the watch says elite and the mile says average, believe the mile.

Keep bedtime steady on training days.

Big training days push bedtime around. The regularity of your sleep matters more than squeezing in an extra half hour.

The evidence. Windred et al., Sleep, 2024. In 60,977 UK Biobank participants, sleep regularity predicted mortality more strongly than sleep duration did.

Insider tipThe consistent wake time lab runs this as an experiment against your own baseline.

Ask your coach what the numbers mean.

With a membership, an AI coach reads this data every morning and writes you a report before you are out of bed. It answers from your own numbers, not from generic advice. Ask whether you are ready for tomorrow’s long session and it answers from your HRV, resting heart rate, and sleep. Health Score shows how each grade feeds your overall longevity estimate.

Common questions

Do I need to wear it to sleep for sleep tracking?

Yes. Track Sleep with Apple Watch must be on and the watch worn for at least an hour overnight. With Ultra’s battery, charging during your morning routine covers it.

Why is VO2 max missing after a workout?

Apple only estimates it during qualifying outdoor walks, runs, and hikes with GPS on. Indoor and interval sessions do not update it.

Will Garmin or Oura data be counted twice?

No. Keep Ultra 3 as your primary device and Gyroscope deduplicates the other sources against it.
