Does Garmin Forerunner 965 work with Gyroscope?

Yes. Gyroscope connects to Garmin directly. We get steps, workouts, heart rate, resting heart rate, sleep with stages, overnight HRV, respiratory rate, blood oxygen, and VO2 max from your Garmin Forerunner 965.

DirectData fit: 5/5

Connect your Garmin account inside Gyroscope. The direct connection brings sleep stages and HRV, which Garmin’s optional Apple Health export leaves out.

Applies to: Forerunner 965, 955, and 970.

What we get

  • Steps and distanceGarmin can be your steps source in Gyroscope.
  • WorkoutsEvery uploaded activity with its heart rate detail.
  • Heart rate and resting heart rateAll-day readings plus the nightly resting value.
  • Sleep with stagesDuration plus Light, Deep, and REM.
  • Overnight HRVGarmin’s nightly HRV, the number that never reaches Apple Health.
  • Respiratory rateOvernight breaths per minute.
  • Blood oxygenWhen Pulse Ox is enabled on the watch.
  • VO2 maxGarmin’s running and cycling estimates.

What stays behind

  • Training Readiness, Body Battery, and Training StatusGarmin’s own composite scores stay in Garmin Connect. Gyroscope scores sleep and heart from the underlying readings.

How to set it up

  1. Pair the watch in Garmin Connect. In Garmin Connect open More, Garmin Devices, Add Device, Find Nearby Accessories, put the watch in pairing mode, choose Set Up, and confirm the six-digit code, following Garmin’s iOS pairing guide. Wear it for one night so the first sleep is on your account.
  2. Connect Garmin in Gyroscope. Open Gyroscope, open your data sources, choose Garmin, and sign in to your Garmin account. Keep the watch you wear all day selected as your primary device so nothing is counted twice. If the Garmin is the watch you wear all day, choose it as your steps source too.
  3. Check your dashboard. After the next Garmin Connect sync you should see today’s steps, your resting heart rate, last night’s sleep with stages, and your HRV. Activity, heart, and sleep grades fill in over the first week.

What you can do with it

Use overnight HRV the way Garmin intends.

Garmin averages HRV across the whole night and compares it with a three-week baseline. That is the right way to read it, so do not react to one morning.

The evidence. Plews et al., Sports Medicine, 2013. In elite endurance athletes, a rolling seven-day HRV average tracked adaptation to training, while single-day values were too noisy to act on.

Insider tipGyroscope’s Sleep Score combines that HRV with resting heart rate and duration, and Sleep Battery carries a seven-night debt, so a heavy training week shows up as a trend rather than a scare.

Let resting heart rate referee the training load.

Two or three nights of resting heart rate a few beats above your norm after a big block means you have not absorbed it yet. The direct connection gives you the nightly value every morning.

The evidence. Zhang, Shen and Qi, CMAJ, 2016. Across about 1.2 million people, every 10 beats per minute of higher resting heart rate came with roughly 9% higher all-cause mortality, which makes the long-term trend the number to protect.

Insider tipRun resting heart rate against weekly training volume in the correlations view. The best-lag reading tells you how many days your body takes to settle after a hard week.

Read training load against sleep, not against the plan.

The 965 tracks every session in detail. The question Garmin cannot answer is what the load did to your nights, and that is exactly what a combined timeline shows.

The evidence. Cappuccio et al., Sleep, 2010. A meta-analysis of 16 studies and 1.38 million people: both short and long sleep were associated with higher mortality, so the goal is a steady seven to eight hours, not more.

Insider tipRun sleep score against training days in the correlations view. Most runners see a dip the night after the long run and a rebound two nights later. The lag reading makes that visible.

Keep the schedule as steady as the plan.

Early sessions push bedtime earlier and late ones push it later. The regularity of your sleep matters more than any one long night.

The evidence. Windred et al., Sleep, 2024. In 60,977 UK Biobank participants, sleep regularity predicted mortality more strongly than sleep duration did.

Insider tipThe consistent wake time lab tests it against your own baseline.

Ask your coach what the numbers mean.

With a membership, an AI coach reads this data every morning and writes you a report before you are out of bed. It answers from your own numbers, not from generic advice. Ask whether you are ready for tomorrow’s session and it answers from your HRV, resting heart rate, and sleep. Health Score shows how each grade feeds your overall longevity estimate.

Common questions

Why don’t my sleep stages show up in Apple Health?

Garmin’s Apple Health export guide lists Sleep Analysis without stage detail, and Garmin Connect must be open in the foreground to write at all. The direct Garmin connection is why Gyroscope has the stages.

Can Garmin be my steps source?

Yes. If the Garmin is the watch you wear all day, choose it as your steps source and primary device so the timeline deduplicates consistently.

Can I keep Apple Watch as primary?

Yes. Many people wear Apple Watch by day and use Garmin for training. Keep the watch as primary and Gyroscope merges the Garmin activities and nights against it.
